Maryland Heights Roofing
Owning a house in Missouri there are many things you have to do to keep it looking good and functional. Being a Maryland heights roofing company for many years we know first hand what homeowners focus on. With good reason, money will first go into kitchens and baths before any exterior work gets looked at. That makes sense, as you want to update the things you use the most and it makes your home feel nice and new. In this scenario, your roof would be the absolute last thing that would get some attention. Everyone knows your roof is important and if you mention roof damage, sirens go off and you start to feel your wallet getting smaller. What if there was a way to avoid some of these issues?
It is often said, "The more you know the more you can prepare and be on top of things". The same principles apply to your roof. We often fear the unknown and that gets us in trouble. You know that your roof is the first line of defense from the outside elements and since nothing last forever, you know that applies to your roof too. Now for the things you may not know. Most homes have asphalt shingles and with good maintenance and a little luck from the major storms, your roof should last between 20-30 years before needing a complete new roof.
Now you may be asking, How do I know if I have roof damage?, and that is a very good question. Most people only consider having roof damage when there is a hole in the ceiling. Yes, that is roof damage and barring a major weather event or a falling tree that roof was damaged way before the hole was discovered. Roof damage is anything that compromises the integrity of the roofing structure. For example, if you have missing shingles that is roof damage. It is not major roof damage, but if not taken care of in a timely fashion it will lead to a lot of damage.
Another thing you can look out for is your energy bills, especially in the winter. If you notice that they have risen and you have not done anything out of the ordinary it might be because of your roof. Heat rises and if it is escaping through your roof it is causing your heat to run longer, thus increasing your bill.
Lastly, hail could be considered the enemy of your roof. This is because anything hail larger than a quarter will cause damage to your roof. On top of that, to the untrained eye it would be hard to detect. This is because on your shingles it could resemble dirt marks, but because it is falling from a high altitude and hitting your shingles it is actually breaking the sub-layers of your roof. This causes your roof to wear a lot faster than it should and on many occasions let in moisture; then comes the roof rot.
Yes, this is a lot of information to take in, but the most important thing you can do is be proactive. Make sure you schedule a roof inspection annually. Next, if you have had major storms in your area, especially hail make sure you get a roof inspection. Enterprise contracting has been making homes safe again for many years and would be happy to come out and give you a free roof inspection. Feel free to give us a call 314-455-5000
